Media Advocates for Prevention (MAP)

The Media Advocates for Prevention (MAP) Program is a CDC funded intervention which integrates media development, community outreach, and peer education to promote HIV risk reduction and testing among youth of color.

What does that mean? It means that we work with youth of color (the sector of youth in the community with the highest risk of infection) and train them to use media in order to educate their peers about the risks associated with HIV, as well as the importance of practicing safe sex and getting tested.

MAP is an adaptation of the Community PROMISE intervention; an evidence based, CDC-approved curriculum for HIV prevention that has been proven effective for youth at high risk. The program consists of a core group of “peer advocates” who learn about HIV prevention, media development, media literacy, and community outreach. The peer advocates then create “Role Model Stories” using different forms of media (such as print, audio, and film) to convey what they have learned and share their knowledge with other youth in the community.

If you’d like to become a MAP Peer Advocate, download our application here and submit the completed form to Jennifer Glick by email (jglick.iwes@gmail.com), mail (650 Poydras St., Suite 2317, New Orleans, LA 70119), or fax (504 304-7781).

MAP youth have worked very hard to create relevant media pieces that they can use to share with their peers and effectively spread the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. You can view their work below…
