Our BY-LA 2.0 Adolescent Health portfolio utilizes a Parental Advisory Team (PAT) to advocate for and inform our programming. The aim of the PAT is for parents to engage in discussions with one another in an environment that promotes the positive development of their youth. Parents will be able to suggest content for us to create and implement; pilot test content to make sure it's appropriate and reflective of what parents are comfortable with; and participate in workshops so they can better communicate with their youth. We offer these free workshops for parents and caregivers to support them as the primary educators and supporters for their youths’ sexual & reproductive health needs and link them to appropriate services.

The workshops include:

TEENS, SEX, AND THE LAW

This session focuses on consent and identifying key laws in Louisiana regarding teen sexual activity. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will receive tools and resources to support discussions around consent with their teens.

TALKING TO TEENS: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND COMMUNICATION

This session focuses on identifying and discussing aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships, and distinguishing the difference between different communication styles. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will also receive strategies and resources to effectively communicate with their teens.

ANSWERING SENSITIVE QUESTIONS RELATED TO SEXUAL HEALTH

This session will provide an overview of the most common Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including their modes of transmission, symptoms and treatment. Parents and caregivers who attend this session will role play various sentence starters and discuss strategies for having meaningful conversations with teens about sex and STIs.
